Unpopular opinion: the book. As the show went on it got very off topic and unrealistic. It was like they were trying so hard to talk about these hard topics that they just did way to many all at one time and it made it very confusing and awkward in parts. But the book flowed, it was very very real, very high school appropriate and something I will never be able to forget reading. The end of the book haunted me, because I always thought If she had just stayed then maybe she would have gotten her happy ending with clay. Or she would have gone off to school and seen a whole new world. She still had so much, it just resonated with me that it seemed like a shame. Same with season one. And I would have been so perfectly fine if they just would have done one season. You got to see the pain, you got to feel the heartbreak. And learn the lesson. I don’t think they needed the rest. But part of my is glad they did because season two of the show was one of the first shows to show male on male sexual assault and start a conversation around the topic because it is very real. I’m so conflicted, the show does some things very well, but other pieces just didn’t work. But the entire book did. And it was very beautiful and very heartbreaking. Something I’d want my kids to read someday so we could talk about it and so I can tell that no matter how bad it seems they have someone there for them. Someone who will always love them. And all we can do is hope that is enough for them.
