Appreciation Post for Jessica and Alex's friendship

Jessica and Alex's friendship did not get much screentime this season. I thought they would, since Jess told him that he was the best friend she's ever had in the S3 finale. However, I did like their friendship this season.

Jessica was super annoying and bitchy this season... I felt like Alex was the only one she treated as an equal. She asked him to the dance, did the treasure hunt with him, cried talking about him (and Hannah) during her college interview, looked at him before the walkout for support even though she had both Clay and Justin by her side and was happy for him at Prom. Alex seemed annoyed with her at first, but he texted her during the lockdown (I was pissed that she didn't answer) and confessed to protect her at the end. I also liked what Alex told her in episode 8, "It always has been you and me."

I hated how none of them are facing repercussions for their actions, but I kind of liked that Jess and Alex both ended up at Berkeley.

FML Forever.

Well, sexism wasn't a non-issue in Liberty like it was in your family as the entire culture of that school is sexist and toxic. So Jess did need to be a feminist, but she was a terrible person and didn't represent feminist values.

He didn't even get charged of assault and battery because this show keeps messing up its own storylines. I love this show anyway.

First of all, if every guy in high school you sleep with needs to pass an HIV test you'd never get laid. So that sort of 'being responsible' is actually not possible. And yes, they did not use condoms, which is why I'm surprised that Jess and Diego doesn't have it(It was showed in ep, 10 that they didn't have it). The only possible explanation is writers messed up their own writing. Not the first time in this show TBH.

I hope by the 'thank God I'm not a feminist' part you meant you're glad you're not a toxic feminist. Because feminism means equal rights, and there is nothing wrong with that.

As for Jess not being a feminist, I think 13rw did a very poor job at portraying feminism. Jess keeps cheating on her boyfriends and never takes responsibility; always answers "I dOn'T nEeD yOuR pErMiSSion" to any question asked by anyone; keeps leading Justin on; and he breaks up with her for his sobriety, and Jessica is mad only because Justin is taking his own decisions for once in his life and not begging for her approval. Not to mention her constant lying in season 3, the murder frame-up and ridiculous views towards men and male sports and still facing no consequences- no one even calls her out. From all this, what I understood was Jessica is a terribly insecure girl who acts all strong but doesn't feel safe when she doesn't have complete control over someone else's life. Her entire characterization is a huge glorification of selfishness with the excuse of being a 'feminist' and with having seemingly NO accountability.

Toxic feminism is NOT feminism, but that's where 13rw went wrong, they showed toxic feminism as feminism.

Okay, but I just realized some of the things I said wrong. I'm sorry. She actually told Justin off more than once, and one of the times Justin was crying when she left him. Also yeah, the 'BAN MALE SPORTS' thing was really disrespectful to Justin. But the homecoming protest was about rape culture, so Justin or Zach wasn't really mad at her for that, and I don't know what to say about this.

The question is why Justin kept doing whatever she wanted even after being humiliated multiple times- and how it inflated her ego and made her realize Justin would be okay with any kind of mistreatment is an entirely different discussion. Also Justin literally covering up a murder for her(seriously) and later getting only shit from her (yOu diDn'T LIe, sO yOu dON't cArE iF wE gEt cAuGht) and so so so on just proves my point about Justin even more. Either way, I am 200% sympathetic to both of them because of all the traumatizing experiences they've been through but their wrongs should also be acknowledged.

I'm sorry, but the protest was not, in any means, offensive to Justin.

I agree with most of her feminist activities, and she really has some compassionate moments. Otherwise she's a complete nightmare. She

Cheats on both Alex AND Diego with Justin multiple times and never takes any responsibility
Forces Charlie to go to the dance with her even though she's the one talking about 'consent' all the time
All her speeches about supporting survivors seem useless since she abandons Chlöe when she's pregnant with her rapist's child, only because she was mad at Chlöe for dating Bryce. Chlöe was not dating him for fun, she was mentally and sexually abused and had no one else. But Jessica not only refuses to help her but also calls her out in front of the whole school for being silent. Talk about being a hypocrite, since Jessica reported the incident six months after she was raped. Also, she stays friends with Ani, who knowingly slept with her rapist just because she framed Monty to save Jessica's lying ass.
Keeps dating Justin and at the same time lying to him about Bryce's murder when she knows his family is falling apart because of that
Stays silent over Clay's arrest
Makes Justin feel guilty for wanting to recover
Tells everyone to take responsibility for their actions but never takes any of her own actions

Yet, it's disgusting that people are so mad at her now only because she treated Justin like shit this season. Everyone is like hOw cAn sHe dAte Diego a mOnTh after jUsTiN diEd or sHe kEpT sayIng JustIn that they didn't mean anything and she knew how much he loved him blah blah. Jessica can date anyone she liked after Justin's death, there's no moral issue there, and she was with Diego even a few days before Justin's death. Also, she did not keep saying anything, she just told him off once- which she should- because she had a boyfriend. And where was this fan-righteousness when she literally cheated on Alex and Diego WITH Justin? Y'all were cheering them, were you not?

I'm sorry about Justin's death, and I know people will be sensitive about him. But he was not a saint either. Alex let him in when he was homeless and saved his life in season 2 when he was choking on his puke. Then Justin had to back stab him and sleep with his girlfriend when Alex was waiting for Jessica at the dance floor with a PARALYZED leg got from a suicide attempt. Way to show you're a decent human being, Justin. Then he narcs about Alex's addiction to Jessica and fails to tell her about his own? Not to mention Alex didn't tell Jess even though he knew about it. Also, Jessica tells Justin off the first time because she felt guilty, but Justin never even feels bad. Talk about being an ungrateful asshole.

Moral of the story: Justin fangirls may not like it, but Justin was the one who encouraged Jessica to be self-righteous. He deserved the shit he got from her. He was delusional if he had thought she would be fair to him when she was this nasty to all her other boyfriends, and... well, everyone.
