Benito Martinez (b. June 28, 1971) is an American actor. He portrays Sheriff Diaz in Netflix's 13 Reasons Why.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Benito Martinez got his start at the age of eight on stage playing the vihuela in his father's mariachi at the age of eight. The next year, he started participating in theatrical productions at a bilingual theater company, co-founded by his mother. He attended the Dramatic Art's Hollywood High Performing Arts Magnet in Los Angeles and the London Academy of Music.

He is best known for playing David Aceveda in the Golden Globe winning drama The Shield (2002). He has been nominated for many acting accolades and won the 2007 ALMA Award for best supporting actor and is recognized by the NOSOTROS Foundation and the National Hispanic Media Coalition for outstanding performance in a dramatic series.

Martinez's film credits include Million Dollar Baby (2004), Saw (2004), New Suit (2002), Kill Your Darlings (2006) and My Family (1995).
