I thought I'd never be able to get away from who I was. Who I've been. From what hurt. So, I climbed the bridge, and I looked down, and I saw this, like, flash of purple, like a jacket. And somehow, I just knew. So, I went down below the bridge. And I saw it was him. Bryce. Dead. Cold, like, gray. Like, not a person. And I thought 'That's it. He doesn't get to be anyone anymore. It's over for him.' And I knew right then that I didn't want to be dead. I want to live, and keep getting better and be stronger, and that's that's why I want to give the gun away. Because I didn't need it anymore.
— Tyler, in "Angry, Young and Man"

Tyler Down is a main character in 13 Reasons Why. He is a graduate of Liberty High School, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Down, and listed by Hannah Baker as the fourth reason that led up to her suicide. He is a survivor of rape, along with Jessica Davis. He is a photographer who formerly worked as his high school's Student Life Photographer. He is portrayed by Devin Druid.

Tyler was Liberty High's Student Photographer. In the first season, he is shown as the subject of "Tape 2, Side B", where he was responsible for photographically stalking Hannah Baker and spreading a photo he captured of Hannah and Courtney Crimsen kissing to everyone in the school, which ultimately ended Courtney and Hannah's friendship, due to Courtney being too scared about coming out as a lesbian. He is constantly bullied by Montgomery de la Cruz and his friends, but finds friends of his own. His friends leave him which makes him feel lonely and depressed.

Tyler goes through ups and downs in the second season, he seems to have become stronger and healthier, but still gets pushed aside by the group who don't see him as a friend he makes friends with Cyrus. He goes on a date with his crush, Mackenzie, and they begin dating, but eventually break up. Cyrus and Tyler have a tight but troublesome friendship and they take their hatred for the school bullies out on the school by various things, most notably: vandalizing the football field with the word "Rapists". Their miscreant behavior results in Cyrus being suspended and Tyler entering a programme to control his anger. He comes back incredibly happy and much healthier. Unfortunately, his glowing happiness is put to a monstrous stop, when he is mercilessly and brutally beaten and raped by Montgomery de la Cruz with a broom handle in the boys bathroom. Monty's actions push him beyond over the edge as he attempts a school shooting in "Bye", attempting to kill everyone who hurt him and then himself. However Clay Jensen, who Tyler had stopped considering a friend, convinces Tyler that it isn't the right way to make the hurting stop.

Tyler works through his trauma in the third season, Clay gathers some friends together to help take care of Tyler during his recovery. Tyler joins Hands Off Our Bodiesa group of sexual assault activists determined to dismantle the rape culture at Liberty High—as an ally. Tyler works up the courage to tell his friends that Monty raped him: he shares an emotional hug with Clay who Tyler now considers to be his best friend. Tyler shares his trauma with Jessica Davis, another rape survivor, he shows her a video he made before he planned to go through with the shooting, in which he confesses what Monty did to him and says goodbye to his parents, whom the video was meant for. He reveals to her that he told Bryce, who felt sorry for him and promised he would make Monty leave him alone. At the end, he showcases his photography: photos of everyone who has helped him, being happy.

Tyler reveals that he no longer feels anger toward Monty, just pity for him in the fourth season. Tyler begins to lose his friends trust as they grow suspicious of him. Tony believes that Tyler is attempting another school shooting when the school goes into lockdown: code red, and informs the Principal that Tyler had been looking at guns. Lockdown is lifted, revealed to be a practice drill that felt more real, Tony becomes alarmed at his mistake with Tyler who becomes angry. During his college interview, he admits to struggling but wanting to start over. He wants to study photography in an arts school and showcases his project on guns: which he explains are beautiful but deadly; wanting to get people to see and think why people feel attracted to guns but also fear them simultaneously. Tyler's attempt to help the police is halted by Clay and Tony who falsely believed that he was being set up to be arrested but save themselves from outing what Tyler almost did at Spring Fling. Clay and Tony apologize to Tyler and re-affirm their trust in him. Tyler attends Prom with Estela de la Cruz and begins dating her, and graduates Liberty High School.

Early Life

Very little is known about Tyler's past. What we do know comes from his own words in his goodbye video where he talks about hurting, feeling cut and bleeding everyday since he was 7 which has caused him to feel rejected, alone, and that his life is meaningless. This shows Tyler's been bullied and hurt by others for years which may have caused him to isolate himself in photography and yearbook which ended in him becoming anti social and others at Liberty to view him as a loner and a creep and was bullied often by other students, mostly jocks, only increasing his feelings of rejected.

Throughout the Series

Season 1

In the flashback, Tyler would always stand outside Hannah's window, taking pictures of her. Hannah didn't know that it was Tyler, and so Courtney offered to help her catch the stalker. Tyler snapped a picture of Hannah and Courtney drunk and making out. Hannah figured out that Tyler was the photographer then. The next day, he was confronted by Hannah and he supposedly gave her the pictures to dispose. Tyler then asks if Hannah would want to hang out with him, but she declines, and so an angry Tyler group-texts the picture of the two making out to the whole school. At present, everyone still had a copy of the picture on their computers.

Tyler was inside his house. His windows had some visible damage to it, and his dad asked him what was going on. He proceeded to tell him that he didn't know anything. After a while of prying, his father decided to leave him be. At school, he was confronted by Clay about the pictures and Tyler revealed that Tyler was in love with Hannah, and the fact that she didn't try to hide who she was. After Clay said that he wanted the pictures destroyed, Tyler gave him a picture of Clay and Hannah together, for his keeping. Later, a naked picture of Tyler was sent to the whole school by Clay, as a payback for what he did to Hannah.[1]

Season 2

Tyler is the first of the individuals called upon from Hannah's tapes to court. He relays the whole truth of his stalking of her. He states that he was attracted to her and met her when attempting to gather yearbook photos and being rebuffed she offered herself as a subject. Tyler helped Hannah access her locker and then asked her to model for a photo collage in the park to which she agreed.

Tyler eventually upset Hannah during the Justin Foley playground incident by offering to console her with a photoshoot. He then that night made his way to her house knowing it from the earlier pre-school party. He caught her sexting and captured his first illicit, unauthorized photo of her.[2]

Tyler befriended outcast punk student Cyrus in class through complimenting his drawings and drew a crush from his sister Mackenzie. Tyler and Cyrus proceeded to revenge prank those tied to the Hannah Baker suicide depending upon their honesty in court. School Captain Marcus was set up with an incriminating video and paint explosion whilst he and Cyrus vandalized his car, blackmailing him to turn against Bryce Walker.

Tyler went on a date at the Crestmont with Mackenzie, and they began kissing before he abruptly excused himself. In the hallway, it is revealed he had prematurely ejaculated and ran out as he was embarrassed. Tyler's friendship with Cyrus falls apart at an underground metal gig after he insults a persistent Mackenzie.[3]

After posting photos of him and Cyrus vandalizing the school, he and Cyrus were in trouble. Cyrus got suspended and Tyler was sent to a program to help him control his anger. In "Bye", Tyler came back to school, seeming quite happy and he seemed to have, somewhat, let go, only to be cornered in the boys bathroom at Liberty High by Montgomery and two other boys, bashed in the face multiple times, drowned in a toilet bowl and brutally sodomized with the handle of a broomstick. The boys walked out leaving him half-naked and bleeding on the floor. This scene was likely implemented to show that men and boys can be sexually assaulted too.

This was the final straw for Tyler and he decided to go through with his plan to commit a school shooting. Tyler gathered four guns (three handguns and an Assault Rifle) and headed to the school, where the Spring Fling dance was being held. At the dance, Mackenzie showed Cyrus a concerning text Tyler had sent her, Cyrus told Clay and the other students. Clay advised everyone to lock the doors, stay inside, and not call the police, as he knew Tyler would get killed. Clay went outside and talked Tyler down, while they heard sirens in the distance, he told him he won't get out of it alive, but he doesn't want him to die. Tyler finally relented, Tony pulled up and shouted for him to get into the car. Clay took the assault rifle, Tyler got into Tony's car and they sped away before the police arrived. The season ended with Clay, Justin, and Jessica waiting outside the school.

Season 3

After his attempted school shooting, Tyler is still traumatized by the cruel act of Montgomery, but he never talks about it to anyone. The whole group of friends (except Zach Dempsey) decides to help each other to keep an eye on Tyler and make him better.

During the season, the people closest to Tyler are Alex Standall, Tony Padilla, Clay Jensen along with Jessica Davis. To help Tyler channel his anger, Tony invites him to train in boxing with Alex and Caleb. Thereafter, Tyler decides to get rid of all his weapons, knowing that he no longer needs them and that he feel better with himself. However, he is still threatened and mocked by Montgomery, which alarms Alex in particular. Tyler decides to join Jessica's club as an "ally," but does not reveal that he has been the victim of rape too.

When Mr. Porter returns, he informs Clay that Tyler is acting weird, which is true : during the season, Tyler refuses to be touched, he doesn't use the bathroom and has even try to commit suicide twice. Clay decides to confront Tyler and Tyler finally tells him the truth and Clay hugs him to reassure him.[4]

We later learn that Tyler also told Bryce the truth. Indeed, Tyler had saved a video of him on a USB key, explaining why he wanted to cause his attempted school shooting, and the fact that he has felt alone and martyred for a very long time. Bryce, seeking redemption, decides to threaten Montgomery, prohibiting him from approaching Tyler.

Later, Tyler also tells Jessica the truth using the video. She reassures him by telling him that he should tell his story only when he feels ready.

During the school assembly, Tyler, supported by Clay and Jessica, decides to stand up, announcing aloud: "My name is Tyler Down, and I'm a survivor". Charlie St. George, a sophomore, knowing the truth about Montgomery, encourages Tyler to file a complaint. Consequently, Montgomery is imprisoned for the rape of Tyler.[5]

Tyler decides to protect Alex and keep the secret of Bryce's murder. At Monet's, Tyler is doing a photo exhibit of all the people that supported and helping him in the past few months, claiming that having friends is an amazing thing. He reconciled with Zach at the same time.[6]

Season 4

Approximately one month has passed since the events of season 3. Tyler calls Clay to ask for a ride to the Sheriff’s station, as he's been called in for a meeting with Sheriff Diaz and Deputy Standall. After his meeting, Tyler then returns to Clay with concerning news ; the police have found the bag of guns in the river. He tells them that he ahead bought the guns but they were stolen from him and both of them believe him. Clay believes Tyler but the young man does not tell the group anything about his interrogation.

At Justin’s welcome home party, Clay, Jessica, Ani, Zach, Alex, Tyler, Tony, and Charlie gather for the first time since Bryce's murder case. Tyler leaves the party early. Clay informs everyone about what happened with Tyler. Some, like Jessica, think Tyler is going to report them, others like Alex or Charlie think they should trust Tyler.

At Future Fair, Liberty students gather to check out the club and institution representatives. Tyler is approached by newcomer Winston Williams at the Yearbook Club stand. Winston shows interest in joining the Yearbook Club. The two later get together again as Tyler shows him around the Yearbook club room.[7]

While visiting Sanderson University, Tyler enjoys photographing the buildings.[8]

Tyler accompanies Tony as the DJ of the Valentine's Day Dance. Later, he is called by phone and must leave the premises. Tony follows him and sees Tyler get into Deputy Standall's car, and therefore suspects Tyler.[9]

Tony questions Tyler and the boy is offended that Tony doesn't trust him. During the same day, Tyler learns from Alex that Winston knew Monty.[10]

Tony and Justin follow Tyler and sees him giving money to a gun dealer. Tony and Clay therefore think that Tyler could again prepare for a school shooting and they watching over him.[11]

A red level alert is triggered, and students must stay in the classrooms and lock themselves. But Tony notices that Tyler has disappeared and warns Clay by message. It turns out that Tyler is actually in the bathroom with Montgomery's sister Estela de la Cruz, and the two young teenagers are having an intense conversation. All of the students later learn that this was just an "exercise" to prepare them for a possible attack.[12]

Whiile Tyler goes on a dangerous date, Tony and Clay try to save him and fail to be killed by an arms dealer. The truth about Tyler is revealed at the beginning of episode 8. It turns out that Tyler was worked for the police and was used as bait to arrest the traffickers of firearms. After this case settled, Tyler takes part in the rally orchestrated by Clay and Jessica ; when he is about to be arrested by a police officer, Tyler is saved by Tony.[13]

Tyler offers Estela to come to the ball with him, she accepts with enthusiasm. During the ball, we see them dancing, together and happy.[14]

After Justin's illness was announced, Tyler was seen several times in the hospital waiting room. He attends Justin's funeral next to Estela. During Jessica and Clay's graduation speech, Tyler listens to them with a big smile. Later, he offers Alex to carpool to visit Estela and Alex’s boyfriend, Charlie. That's when we can see that Alex and Tyler will go to the same university and that Tyler and Estela are now a couple.

After that, the group leaves buried Hannah Baker tapes, showing that they have made peace with their past and that they are ready to move on. Tyler says the following sentence: "If anyone ever needs any help, anytime, anyplace, just send a group text, say, "Gordon Lightfoot" ", which shows that they can always count on each other and that they will stay friends forever.[15]

Tyler is Hannah's fourth reason of why she committed suicide.

S01E04-Tape-2-Side-B-019-Hannah-Courtney

Hannah and Courtney kissing in "Tape 2, Side B".

Tyler developed a crush on Hannah, however, he was too shy to tell her his feelings in person and he then decided to begin stalking her and taking photos of her without her consent, which completely frightened her. Eventually, Courtney volunteered to help Hannah catch her stalker and they were eventually able to catch Tyler in the act of taking pictures, causing him to flee the scene. However before this occurred he was able to get a photo of Hannah and Courtney kissing, evidence of Courtney being a lesbian.

Hannah personally confronted Tyler at school and demanded the photos he took and all the negatives, which he gave to her. Tyler attempted to ask Hannah out but she just laughed and left. Out of spite, Tyler spread the photograph of Hannah and Courtney to the entire school, causing Courtney to turn her back on Hannah for a time. Despite this, nobody at school figured out that it was Hannah and Courtney in the photo. Tyler's actions ultimately led to Courtney betraying Hannah and destroying her reputation in order to hide the fact that she was in the photo alongside Hannah after Montgomery confronted her about the photo.

Personality

Tyler is shown to be a socially awkward, uncaring, spiteful and selfish person. Being a dedicated photographer, he appears to not care at all about people's privacy and constantly stalks people and takes pictures behind their backs and as such is despised by a majority of the people at Liberty High. He was shown to have a crush on Hannah Baker though was too shy to tell her this in person, when he first saw her, he asked to do a photoshoot with her, after she asked him to take a picture of her, seeing that he asked a group of girls and they harshly rejected him, she gave him a chance because no one else seemed to, after the picture of her got sent around the school, Tyler unknowingly and accidentally said the wrong thing, she rejected him and he resorted to stalking her for days just to get photographs of her which completely frightened her.

After being caught by Hannah and Courtney and giving up the photos he took of them at her request, he finally told Hannah of his feelings though due to his actions was coldly rejected by her and out of spite he cruelly spread the photo of Hannah and Courtney kissing to the whole school which not only further ruined Hannah's already damaged reputation, but also destroyed her friendship with Courtney and led Courtney to betray Hannah and destroy her reputation even further just to save herself.

Tyler appears to show little remorse for what he did to Hannah and no doubt wants the tapes to be kept a secret to protect himself from punishment. He is shown to be willing to resort to extreme measures to protect himself as it is he who suggests that he and the others on Hannah's list use Bryce as a scapegoat to minimize the damage on themselves as he views Bryce as being dangerous and that his actions are the worst, completely ignoring that he is guilty of crimes as well such as trespassing and invasion of a minor's privacy.

Due to his actions towards Hannah and Courtney, Tyler, like Hannah has become a victim of intense bullying and ridicule and as a result of Clay, humiliation on the same level as that suffered by Hannah. The others on Hannah's list even grant her request to throw rocks at his window for revenge on what he did, showing how much they hate him. By the end of the first season, Tyler is shown to have finally had enough of his torment and appears to be embarking on a violent, murderous path as he purchases an entire arsenal of weapons and also makes a hit list of all those on Hannah's tapes and those who have bullied him, possibly showing he wants to murder them all as revenge.

In the second season, Tyler appears to be regretful of his actions and appears to be trying to turn his life around. He tells the truth in court and helps Alex in his recovery. He even makes friends with other outcasts, most notably Cyrus. However, the majority of the school still ostracize him, as the jocks still dislike him and Chloe refuses to let him photograph cheerleading practice, which the principal tells him he is no longer allowed to do. He also appears to have developed violent tendencies, as he keeps the guns he had in the trunk to shoot cans and bottles, and later a bird invites Cyrus to do it with him and even admits that it is easier to do if one imagines the target as someone they hate. His change is shown when he starts listening to heavy metal music, courtesy of Cyrus. It also appears that he is fearful of consequences from his authority figures, as when his parents confront him overshooting guns, he claims it was Cyrus' BB gun, and when they find out he bullied Marcus, he claims it was Cyrus' idea. He also abandons Clay after taking him to shoot guns when the cops start to show up. When Cyrus confronts him over abandoning Mackenzie on their date, he claims it felt weird because it was Cyrus' sister.

Throughout the season, Tyler revenge pranks the people on Hannah's tapes with Cyrus' help depending on whether or not they tell the truth in court, but it is unclear whether he is doing this for Hannah or is simply releasing his frustrations on those he believes deserve to be bullied. This attitude of prioritizing himself eventually costs him his friendship with Cyrus, as he insults Mackenzie when she tries to console him over his premature ejaculation on their date, doing so to prevent Cyrus from finding out about it. After this, and others finding out about his date, he snaps and admits that he and Cyrus torched the field, by posting pictures of it on Facebook.

After coming back from a program to help him control his anger, Tyler appears to be fine. However, once Montgomery sodomizes him with a mop handle, he snaps and attempts to commit a school shooting, regardless of the consequences. However, Clay manages to talk him down, showing that Tyler is not completely gone yet.

In Season 3, we see Tyler to be completely traumatized by his rape by Monty as well as having almost committed a school shooting. He tries to recover with help from Clay and his friends and begins to take boxing lessons, which slowly begins to improve his confidence and mental health. He also begins taking steps to fully redeem himself for past wrongs. Though he eventually attempts to commit suicide, he decides not to once he sees Bryce's battered corpse, which results in him reporting Bryce's body to the police anonymously. He finds new purpose when he joins Jessica's support group and ally and eventually tells Clay and Jessica about his rape, as well as revealing his status as a victim.

Tyler has made mistakes and has gone through the most evolution of the Baker's dozen, asides from Justin and Zach. But he's a much different character than he used to be, and he seems to be recovering from the traumatic events of his past and moving on to live a better life.

In season 4, despite the pressure the boy has on his shoulders, Tyler seems to be getting better since the assault. He becomes friends with Winston, without knowing that he was Montgomery's ex-boyfriend. Winston asks Tyler what Monty did to him. Tyler is still uncomfortable but admits that he is no longer angry, and that he even felt pity for Monty.

Physical Appearance

Tyler is tall, lanky, and pale. He has curly brown hair and dresses very simply, normally wearing jeans, a shirt, and a jacket. He carries a camera with him everywhere because of his duties with the yearbook.

Relationships

Hannah Baker

Hannah is Tyler's former friend and crush. Tyler crushed on her after she was nice to him and he secretly started taking pictures of her at her house. He spread a kissing picture of her and Courtney around as revenge for rejecting him. Tyler is the fourth reason Hannah killed herself.

Tyler and Hannah first saw each other at Kat’s party, where he took a picture of her, Kat and Clay.

S02E01-The-First-Polaroid-099-Tyler-Hannah

Tyler and Hannah in "The First Polaroid"

Tyler was the first person who had to testify in the case of the Bakers against the school. He relayed the whole truth of his stalking of her. He stated that he was attracted to her and met her when attempting to gather yearbook photos and being rebuffed she offered herself as a subject after some girls told him to go away. Tyler helped Hannah open her locker and they introduced themselves. He then asked her to model for a photo shoot in the park to which she agreed.

At the photoshoot, Tyler saw that Hannah had been crying. Hannah apologized to Tyler for not being camera ready, but Tyler said that she was good and told her to be herself. In court, Tyler mentioned wondering who would make her cry when she only ever deserved to be happy.

In present time, the school’s lawyer asked if it's true that because Hannah liked the attention and no real bullying resulted from the photos he took. Tyler denied this, talking about the picture Justin took of her saying that it affected her. A flashback showed Tyler trying to talk to Hannah about it, but upset her by offering to console her with a photoshoot. She told Tyler to get away from her. That night, he wanted to cheer her up by giving the picture from their photoshoot. He made his way to her house, thought that he saw her sexting and captured his first illicit, unauthorized photo of her. He started doing this more often, stalking her.

Clay Jensen

Clay is Tyler's friend. They didn't always like each other but they now have a stable relationship and are very good friends.

S01E04-Tape-2-Side-B-041-Clay-Jensen

Clay confronting Tyler in the dark room in "Tape 2, Side B".

In a flashback to Kat's going away party held at Hannah's first house, Tyler took a photo of Kat, Hannah and Clay for the yearbook photos. Clay and Alex talked about what Alex did but was interrupted by Tyler who asked what they were talking about. Clay lied and said that they were talking about a homework project but Tyler knew he was lying, and told them that the only class they have together is gymnastics class, he then asked again. They both refused to tell him, Alex told him that it was creepy that he knew what class they have together and made him leave.

Instructed by Hannah, Clay went into Tyler's backyard and watched Tyler through his window. Marcus Cole heard a car alarm and found Clay, he told Clay that almost everyone on the tapes threw a rock through Tyler's window, he encouraged Clay to throw one and pass the tapes onto the next person. The next day, he saw Tyler in school and called his name, Tyler turned to see Clay, turned back and walked away from him fast. Clay tried to catch up with him but wasn't fast enough. After he listened to the tapes, he walked into the dark room in school and confronted Tyler, Tyler told him he was not supposed to be in the dark room, Clay sarcastically commented on the irony of Tyler calling him out on trespassing. Tyler asked him if throwing a rock through his window wasn't enough, but Clay told him that he didn't throw a rock like the others did.
S01E04-Tape-2-Side-B-046-Tyler-Down

Clay and Tyler talking at a basketball game in school in "Tape 2, Side B".

Tyler asked what he wanted and Clay told him to delete the photos that he took of Hannah and Courtney or he would take him to jail. Tyler believed that he was bluffing but Clay recited a law that could actually put him in jail. Tyler panicked and told Clay that he wasn't a criminal and revealed that he was in love with Hannah, Tyler then revealed the reason he took pictures of her. Clay told him to delete the pictures of Hannah and Courtney and left. Later on at a pep rally, Tyler told him that the pep rallies are pathetic, "The way they celebrate themselves and just their whole group. It's better to stay outside of it all, you know?" Clay responded with "No, I don't know". Clay then left the pep rally. At night, Clay came back to Tyler's window, he picked up a rock and was about to throw it, but Tyler came into the room and undressed. Tyler then got dressed again for bed and received a text from Clay, he opened it and saw a photo of him facing away from the camera, completely naked, taken through his window by Clay and cried.

Clay arrived at school the next day and saw Tyler being teased by Bryce about the photo, as everyone in the school received it. In the school hallways Tyler confronted Clay about the photo. Tyler asked him what he was doing and Clay told him "Anything. I'm trying to do something, anything, which is more than any of you did". Tyler asked him why he was the only one Clay messed with, Clay corrected him: he was the only one he messed with so far. Clay then saw Courtney Crimsen—the next person on the tapes—and Tyler left.Tyler saw Sheri talking to Clay and waited until he left to ask Sheri if they could both talk to Clay about him being revengeful with the people on the tapes instead of trying to take him down, but Sheri declined it.

Clay approached Tyler in Monet's and confronted him about what he said in court about seeing Hannah sext someone at her house while stalking her. In the library, Clay overheard Tyler become mad at Marcus's lie in court while texting Sheri about an update on Justin Foley.

S02E11-Bryce-and-Chloe-078-Tyler-Clay

Tyler and Clay in the courtroom in "Bryce and Chloe"

Clay walked into Alternative Strategies and Solutions class and saw Cyrus and Tyler, who were also taking the class. Tyler asked him if he was in the right class and Clay affirmed, Tyler asked him why he was there and Clay answered "Truancy, grudges, the hypocrisy of the high school administrators". Cyrus introduces himself and told Clay that Clay helped him fix his bike in freshman year. (After Clay leaked the tapes audio) He then praises Clay for getting a confession out of Bryce and recording it as evidence; Clay thanked him and Cyrus thanked him back. Clay asked them what they do in the class and Cyrus answered "We plot the complete and violent overthrow of civilization". Clay then told him to count him in. After Clay got beaten up, Cyrus and Tyler saw him in the school parking lot and Cyrus asked him what happened, Clay looked over at some jocks and Cyrus told him that he had a way of "getting the shit kicked out" of him. Clay sarcastically thanked him for noticing. Cyrus told him it was about power, he asked Clay if he wanted to take back the power and then told him what he and Cyrus had planned later that night and invited Clay along, Tyler was hesitant at first as he did not completely trust Clay. At night, Clay, Tyler and Cyrus went to the playing field to vandalize it. Clay saw cheerleaders and jocks going into a shed and then realized that he discovered The Clubhouse and left before they did anything serious.

S02E11-Bryce-and-Chloe-079-Clay-Tyler

Clay and Tyler practice shooting at a make shift gun range in "Bryce and Chloe".

Clay hallucinated Hannah, while he was alone in the court room. He stopped as Tyler came in, he asked if Clay was okay and Clay affirmed but was visibly not okay. Tyler sat down next to Clay, Clay told him that what Cyrus said about taking back power was bullshit, "Nothing does anything". Tyler asked him if he wanted to know what real power felt like. Tyler then took him to a make shift shooting range—originally used by himself and Cyrus before Cyrus willingly drifted away from Tyler—got guns and used beer cans and glass bottles as targets to shoot. Clay complimented Tyler's shooting accuracy, Tyler then told him that it helped when he named the targets after people they don't like. Clay then aimed at a target and hallucinated Hannah behind him, she said "Bryce Walker" and he shot at the target with perfect accuracy; Tyler then complimented the accuracy. Tyler and Clay then realized that they had no more bullets left, Tyler went to the guns on the ground to exchange the empty ones with full ones, but they heard a siren. Tyler urged Clay to give him the gun so they could run. Unknown to Tyler, Clay started to hallucinate Hannah reciting her words on the last tape she recorded which detailed Bryce raping her to him and therefore wasn't concentrating on Tyler. As Tyler realized it was too late, he grabbed the guns and told Clay to ditch his and run and then left. Clay then stopped the hallucination and ran after he realized what was going on.

S02E13-Bye-092-Tyler-Down

Tyler holds his assault rifle up to Clay's neck in "Bye".

In the middle of the Spring Fling dance, Clay was warned by Cyrus that Tyler had something planned—Tyler warned Mackenzie via text message (which is not shown), Mackenzie warned Cyrus and Cyrus warned Clay—they all panicked, and already had it implied in their heads what Tyler intended to do. Tyler loaded up two handguns and placed them inside his tactical clutch belt. After Clay then went to find Tony for help, Tyler took another handgun out of his bag, closed the bag and then put it on his back. He then took out an assault rifle from the trunk of his car and closed the trunk and saw Clay run out of the building to meet him. Clay asked Tyler what he was doing and Tyler told Clay to leave, he walked closer to Clay and Clay told him not to do anything. Clay and Tyler continuously fight, Justin and Jessica then ran out of the building terrified and shouted for Clay. Clay asked them to go back inside, they stood in shock looking at Clay and Tyler instead and Tyler raised his gun at them, as the situation escalated Clay became scared and strongly demanded they go back inside so they ran back into the building.

Clay turned back to face Tyler and Tyler raised his assault rifle up to Clay's chest, Clay continuously tried to talk Tyler out of it but Tyler refused to believe him, Tyler became agitated and raised his gun further up to Clay's neck. Clay became visibly more scared and Tyler continuously walked further closer to him with his gun pressed to Clay's neck, as Clay tried to talk him out of it. Clay started to cry and walked further backwards with Tyler's gun pressed to his neck as he carried on trying to talk him out of it. Tyler stopped and turned to look behind him as he heard sirens, Clay got closer to him and told him that he would not get out of it alive and that he didn't want Tyler to die. Tyler turned his face and swung his gun back to Clay, this time further up to Clay's face. Clay became scared and then relaxed his face and told Tyler "I don't want you to die. If you think this is the way, if you really think this'll change a goddamn thing, and not just be another fucking tragedy that adults cry about for a week and then forget, if you really think this is gonna be different then do what you gotta do.", Tyler stared at him blankly and Clay begged him. Tyler then told him that there was nothing else he could do.

Clay told him that they would figure it out together and reached to grab the top of his gun and slowly lowered it and let go of it. Tony arrived and demanded Tyler get into his car, Clay kept the gun and escorted Tyler into the car and Tony drove off. After he managed to talk Tyler down from an attempt at a school shooting, Jess and Justin ran back outside and asked Clay if he was okay, he told them he wasn't and Justin asked "This is fucked up right?" and then asked what they were supposed to do.

This season goes through events where Bryce Walker is either dead or alive but not in order, this details their relationship and interactions: starting from when Bryce was alive, to when Bryce is dead; in that order.

Before Bryce died

S03E01-Yeah-I'm-the-New-Girl-049-Clay-Tyler

Tyler and Clay in his bedroom after they dropped him back home in "Yeah. I'm the New Girl".

Clay drove to the spot Tony dropped off Tyler, when he arrived, Clay asked Tyler if he should go home, Tyler then worryingly mentioned his parents. Tony and Clay questioned him on why he was worried. They then drove him back home and Mrs. Down told them that the school texted all the parents about an active shooter being at the school. Clay then texted his parents that he was okay. Clay saw Tyler go up to his bedroom and followed him. Tyler held a letter in his hands and asked him if they should tear it up, Clay became confused and held out his hand for the letter. Tyler was hesitant at first but gave Clay the letter, Tyler then told him that he didn't know if he would see his parents again. Clay then realized that it was Tyler's suicide note. While Tyler slept, Tony and Clay discussed Tyler: the attempted shooting, Tyler's new bruises and ponder what do with him next.

The next day, Tony, Clay and Justin escorted him into school, Tyler saw Monty and started to have a PTSD panic attack, Clay tried to calm him but Tyler pushed him away, Tony then managed to calm him down by giving him breathing exercises. Alex came out of his class and Clay told Tyler what his schedule would be up until their lunch break; Alex and Tyler would have their first lesson together, Alex would escort Tyler to his second lesson and he and Tyler would meet at break. Later, Tyler, Justin and Clay have lunch and—new student: Ani Achola joins them.

S03E02-If-You're-Breathing-You're-a-Liar-007-Tyler-Clay

Clay asks Tyler if they could talk, Clay suggests talking to Dr. Singh for some things he can't help with in "If You're Breathing, You're a Liar".

Tyler approached Clay in the hallway and asked if they could talk, Clay told him that he should make an appointment to talk to Dr. Singh, Tyler stressed that has the group to talk to and Clay affirmed that he did but she could probably help him more as she is a professional.[16] While Clay and Ani had lunch and worked on their school project at Monet's, Tyler approached Clay and told him that Justin didn't show up (as Justin was next to spend time with Tyler), Tyler asked if he should just go home and Ani told him to join them, Tyler didn't want to disrupt them, thinking they were on a date and Clay told him that it wasn't and that he could join them.[17] While Ani, Clay and Tyler are in Monet's (Tyler has headphones in, not paying attention to them), Clay tells Ani what happened at the Spring Fling with him talking Tyler out of the attempted school shooting. Clay told Ani that looking back "it was a really bad choice" but that he would make it again, "exactly the same way". Later on, Clay, Ani and Tyler saw a movie, Clay and Ani argue over what the movie was about, Ani then asked Tyler for his opinion, he gave it and asked Ani if it was what she meant, she affirmed and kissed him on the cheek, he then excused himself to get more popcorn. Clay and Tyler took a walk at night because they couldn't sleep. Tyler asked Clay why he couldn't sleep. Clay told him that he was having nightmares about the night of Spring Fling, in his nightmare Tyler ignored Clay and pulled the trigger; killing him. Tyler apologizes for the nightmares, being the reason for them.

After Bryce died

S03E04-Angry-Young-and-Man-034-Clay-Jensen

Clay hides from Tyler while following him in "Angry, Young and Man".

After Bryce died, Tyler asked Clay if they could talk, Clay told him that they could talk later and asked if he could talk to Dr. Singh about whatever he wanted to say. Tyler told him that he wanted to talk to Clay specifically. Clay concentrated on his phone and didn't respond to Tyler, Tyler then told him that it was important that he talked to him. Clay told him that they could talk at lunch. Tyler affirmed and left. Clay and Ani became suspicious of Tyler possibly killing Bryce after Tyler tried to get rid of guns, they wondered why he was trying to get rid of them now that Bryce is dead. Clay watched Tyler excuse himself from the classroom to go to the bathroom, Clay also excused himself for the same reason and followed Tyler. He watched him go outside and caught up with him and realized that he was just going to pee outside, Clay lied and said that he followed him to talk to him. Tyler explained that he didn't feel comfortable using the bathroom, which Clay understood. Tyler asked him what he wanted to talk about, Clay told him that he wanted to know if the plan was still for Tyler to give Clay the gun so he could dump it, Tyler affirmed. Clay then asked him why he brought his bag out with him, Tyler told him that students steal stuff so he took it all with him, Clay agreed but still felt somewhat suspicious of him.

S03E04-Angry-Young-and-Man-041-Tyler-Clay

Clay looks through Tyler's bag in "Angry, Young and Man".

Clay believed that Tyler had no reason to kill Bryce, however Zach Dempsey informed Clay that he may have had one: Bryce knew about what happened at Spring Fling and could turn him into the police. With Clay, Ani, Justin and Zach talking to each other and assuming the worst in Tyler—which Tyler saw—, Tyler caught onto them and walked fast (taking short cuts) into the photography and printing lab with his bag. Clay ran, trying to catch up with him and followed him into the lab. Tyler waited for him with his bag, Clay walked into the room and Tyler gave him permission to look in it, already knowing that Clay suspected him. Clay checked his bag and found nothing, he was about to apologize when another student came in, he then watched Tyler move in front of a slightly open locker; almost as if to protect it and checked out what Tyler stood in front of. Tyler asked if he was still coming over to his house; Clay affirmed and left. As Clay left Tyler moved to watch Clay leave and then closed the locker.

S03E04-Angry-Young-and-Man-062-Tyler-Clay

Tyler and Clay have dinner with Tyler's parents in "Angry, Young and Man".

Later Clay went over to Tyler's house, and they went up to his bedroom, Tyler's Mom asked him to do a chore and Tyler left his room to do it, Clay then searched his room and found dry mud on Tyler's laptop, he sat down at his laptop and opened it up, he opened up a photo app called "Celluloid LX" and immediately saw pictures of a dead person in water with a hole in their head, wearing the Hillcrest uniform and realized it was Bryce Walker. Tyler walked back into the room and scared Tyler, Tyler stressed to Clay that he could explain it and that it wasn't what it looked like—which is that Tyler killed Bryce and took pictures—Clay became scared and asked him what he did. Mrs. Down interrupted and asked Tyler to keep his door open, and then asked Clay to join them for dinner. Clay then joined Tyler and his parents for dinner. Mr and Mrs. Down started to talk about Bryce's death and possible therapy for Tyler if need be, Tyler told them that everyone was still trying to figure out how they felt. While he stared at Tyler, Clay added that people are also trying to figure out what is true and what isn't while he stared at Tyler. Mrs. Down asked if the school knew if he was murdered, Clay then told her that the newspapers said he was shot, Tyler added that what the papers said didn't prove anything, and added the possibility that Bryce shot himself. Mr. Down comments that Bryce was a troubled kid. Clay had a flashback to when he told Tyler about his nightmare of Tyler at the Spring Fling. Tyler's parents finish eating and thank Clay for taking care of him since the night of Spring Fling.

S03E04-Angry-Young-and-Man-064-Tyler-Clay

Clay telling Tyler about his nightmare of an alternative reality of him and Tyler at Spring Fling in "Angry, Young and Man".

Clay and Tyler then went back up to his bedroom and Tyler pulled out an object, Clay immediately thought Tyler intended to hurt him and Tyler asked Clay if he genuinely believed that he was going to stab him in his own house. Clay told him that he didn't know what he thought but he would take care of whatever Tyler had done. Tyler asked Clay what he believed he had done, Clay stated that he believed that Tyler killed Bryce. Tyler uses the object to take a gun out from a vent in his room. He handed the gun to Clay and explained why he kept the gun—He confronted Monty and Monty told him that Bryce told Monty to rape Tyler, Tyler confronted Bryce and held a gun up to him, Tyler didn't tell Bryce what Monty had done but Bryce revealed that he didn't know much of what Monty had done since the trial and hadn't made him do anything, Bryce then told Tyler that Tyler could shoot him and he wouldn't care and neither would anyone else—Tyler told Clay "I had the chance to kill him and I didn't". Clay became confused and asked Tyler about the photos on his laptop.
S03E04-Angry-Young-and-Man-070-Clay-Tyler

Clay and Tyler sit on his bed after Tyler gives Clay a camera in "Angry, Young and Man".

Tyler revealed that he found Bryce's body, took photos and then anonymously reported it to the police. Clay questioned the anonymity and Tyler told him that he knew how the situation would look against him. Clay then asked him why he was at the bridge, Tyler then revealed that he had thought about killing himself, because no one believed that he could change. Clay told him that he believed he could change, Tyler then told him that he didn't today because he knew Clay was suspicious of him. Tyler explained that he thought he could never get away from what hurt him, from who he was and what he tried to do. Tyler then explained that he looked down in the water and saw a purple jacket and knew it was Bryce, he came down and saw his dead body and realized that "he doesn't get to be anyone anymore, it's over for him, and I knew right then that I didn't wanna be dead, I wanna live and keep getting better and be stronger" Clay then asked about the bag, Tyler opened the bag and handed Clay the content inside. Clay opened up the paper bag and found a camera. Tyler explained "An Exakta VX camera, like in Rear Window, you thought it was cool, remember? This one doesn't actually work, cause that'd be too expensive but it's still cool to look at. I have a chance to be someone else because of you, because of all of you".

Tyler and Clay hugging after Tyler reveals he was raped by Monty in "In High School, Even on a Good Day, It's Hard to Tell Who's on Your Side"

Mr. Porter came back to help stop the police from building a case against Clay, he talked to Clay in Monet's about Tyler and said that Tyler seemed to have been through trauma possibly to do with Montgomery de la Cruz. He then and asked Clay to look out for him and Clay promised he would. Later, Clay confronted Tyler about speaking to the police, Tyler told him that he told them the truth—that Clay is a good person—Clay then apologized for not being there as much. Clay then asked Tyler if something happened with Monty before the Spring Fling. Tyler stuttered and became emotional before he revealed that Monty had raped him with the end of a mop in the bathroom. Clay then comforted Tyler and Tyler cried and broke down in his arms. Clay then went to get him water and asked him if he had told anyone else, Tyler stated that he had told Bryce, and Bryce wanted to help and actually cared, Bryce then left a voicemail for him telling him that things were taken care of. Clay realized that if Bryce confronted Monty, Monty could have hurt him. He told Tyler that they needed to tell an adult but Tyler became scared and Clay backtracked and told Tyler that he didn't need to tell anyone until he was ready. Clay then told Tyler to promise that he would make sure to ask for help if he ever needed it, which Tyler promised he would.

Clay and Tyler talking in Clay's car before Clay goes on the run in "There Are a Few Things I Haven't Told You".

The police started to close in on Clay as they believed that he had killed Bryce. Clay and Tyler then talked in his car, Tyler mentioned that Clay told him that if he could tell the police about what Monty did, it would give them a reason to go after Monty instead. Clay told him not to worry about talking to them. Tyler then asked if it would help to tell them and Clay told him "Not if it doesn't help you". Tyler then stressed that if they have him under oath then the might have to talk about it but Clay stressed to Tyler that he wouldn't say anything. Clay then told him that he might not be around all the time and that Tyler should think about talking to someone else, possibly Jessica. Clay started to go on the run and Tyler called him as he was traveling, Tyler called to ask him to be at school as today was an important day and Clay said he couldn't make it but he would try. Later on, Clay came into the school assembly and wondered what was happening, Jessica had made a speech and encouraged sexual assault survivors to come out and say that they are survivors.
S03E12-And-Then-the-Hurricane-Hit-027-Clay-Tyler

Clay tells Tyler he is proud of him in "And Then the Hurricane Hit".

Clay looked at Tyler and Tyler saw Clay, Tyler then stood up and said his name and admitted that he was a survivor of sexual assault. Jessica had given him the cue to stand up before but he shook his head because he couldn't, it seemed that Tyler couldn't admit it without Clay being there for him. Clay walked up to Tyler and told him that he is proud of him but the police arrive in the assembly and arrest Clay.[18] Clay and Tyler along with the group, listened to Bryce's tape that he recorded confessing to raping Hannah, Jessica and many other girls. Later on, Clay and Tyler and the group all went to Monet's for Tyler. Tyler presented a series of candid photographs he took of people who have helped him since Spring Fling; Clay is in a number of them.[18]

Alex Standall

Alex is Tyler's friend. In the first two seasons, Alex was one of the few people who was nice to him. They developed a close friendship throughout the series.

S01E13-Tape-7-Side-A-081-Alex-Tyler

Tyler taking Alex off his hit list in "Tape 7, Side A".

Alex and Tyler were first seen interacting when Alex was talking to Clay about the tapes and Tyler asked what they’re doing. Alex lied and said that they’re talking about a project, but Tyler knew he wasn’t telling the truth as Alex and Clay only have gym class together. Alex told him that it’s creepy he knows that and to go away.

When Monty was bullying Tyler, Alex told him to leave Tyler alone. Tyler asked “I expect you’d like me to thank you?” but Alex said that he doesn’t want Tyler to ever talk to him again.

At the end of the season, Tyler was seen with photos of several students what seems like a hit list. He remembered Alex standing up for him and took him off the list.

S02E01-The-First-Polaroid-144-Tyler-Alex

Tyler and Alex in "The First Polaroid".

Tyler visited Alex at his house after he testified in court. He brought candy with him, because Alex’ mom had put him on a special diet after his suicide attempt. After the attempt, Tyler had often visited Alex at the hospital and bonded with Alex’ dad. Alex showed Tyler the place he shot himself and explained that he had lost his memory from what happened a month before the attempt. Tyler then revealed that he photographed Alex when he was in a coma because wanted to document him getting better.

Alex asked Tyler if he had copies of the tapes so he could listen to him, but Tyler didn’t have them. He then asked to see the photos of him at the hospital, which Tyler agreed to. When seeing the photos, Alex wondered how he could do that to himself. Tyler told him he didn’t do it himself, but everyone else at the school did.

Tyler came across Alex and his dad at the Baker’s store. Alex’ dad asked Tyler if he’s coming to Alex’ birthday party, but Tyler hadn’t been invited. Alex claimed that Jessica was supposed to invite him, but said that he should come. Upon arriving at the party, Zach and Jessica said that Alex didn’t want him here and sent Tyler away. Alex was upset at them for doing so.

After Tyler’s school shooting attempt, Alex was among the people who wanted to help Tyler by watching him. Alex, Tyler and Tony would often hang out and train at the boxing gym and Alex would encourage Tyler whenever he was training.

S03E01-Yeah-I'm-the-New-Girl-060-Tyler-Alex

Tyler and Alex in "Yeah. I'm the New Girl".

Alex witnessed Monty threatening Tyler, so he confronted Monty in the boys’ restroom. He told Monty to leave Tyler alone or he’ll hurt him. Monty laughed it off and asked if they’re hooking up and that’s the reason he cares about Tyler. Alex then showed Monty his knife and said he’ll “open him up” if he ever speaks to Tyler again.

After it was announced that Bryce, who’s body was recently found, was shot in the head, Jessica suggested that Tyler may have done it. Alex asked her how she could say that and that Tyler is his friend and he’s doing well. However, when Tyler was grabbing something from his bag he still tried to see if it was a gun.

Alex waited for Tyler and school and said that he wanted to check up on him, and not because they told him to but because he wanted to. He told him he believes he didn’t kill Bryce.

Tyler and Alex walked into the boxing gym while discussing if Tony could’ve killed Bryce. Alex didn’t want to talk about it and told Tyler to get in the ring. Tyler asked him if he was supposed to do that with the injuries from his suicide attempt, but Alex said that he’ll be fine and they’ll keep it a secret as that’s what they do for each other. In the ring, Alex started punching Tyler while Tyler tried to say that it wasn’t a good idea to start fighting. Alex started getting angry and said hurtful things to Tyler, calling him a pussy and a freak. Tyler told him to stop and punched back, knocking Alex to the ground. Tyler immediately apologized and tried to help him up, but Alex told him he’s fine and to continue the fight.

It’s revealed that Tyler filmed a goodbye video before he tried to shoot up the school. In the video he thanked Alex for being the only person who was ever nice to him. Alex is the only person he personally addressed besides his parents.

S03E13-Let-the-Dead-Bury-the-Dead-033-Alex-Tyler

Tyler showing Alex his pictures in "Let the Dead Bury the Dead".

Alex met up with Tyler in the photography room and asked if he’s okay as he just found out about Monty being arrested for raping him. He then asked if he still has a gun and said he wanted to know in case Monty’s friends would come after him. In reality, Alex wanted to use the gun to kill himself as he felt guilty for murdering guys and others being arrested for it. Tyler showed Alex the pictures he had taken of himself for the past months. The pictures showed the injuries Monty caused, the bruises fading and Tyler getting happier. Alex asked if talking to the police felt like a weight lifted off his shoulders, which Tyler confirmed. Tyler asked Alex if he’s okay, and Alex said he was.

When the group decided to frame Monty for Bryce’s murder to protect their friends, Tyler agreed to lie about his whereabouts and said that he’d do anything for Alex.

Tyler and Alex interacted significantly less this season. They’re seen standing together or sitting next to each other on several occasions, but are only seen twice having a conversation.

S04E09-Prom-020-Alex-Tyler

Alex and Tyler in "Prom".

Tyler and Alex talked at the camping trip. Tyler asked Alex what had happened between him and Winston because he thought they liked each other. Alex firmly told him to drop it, but Tyler continued by saying that they’re both really good guys. Alex interrupted him and revealed that Winston was with Monty the night Bryce was murdered and only pretends to be their friend to find out who killed Bryce. Tyler asked if this meant they shouldn’t trust Winston, but Alex told him that he doesn’t know who to trust anymore and left Tyler alone.

During a shooter drill, which the students thought might be real, Tony found pictures of guns in Tyler’s back and wanted to show them to the dean. Alex defended Tyler, saying they don’t know if there’s an actual, if it’s Tyler and that it could ruin Tyler’s life.

Alex and Tyler were seen talking at graduation about how when they’re in college, they can drive to Evergreen together to see their boyfriend/girlfriend. This likely means that they’re either going to the same college or to colleges close to each other.

Montgomery de la Cruz

Monty was Tyler's bully and rapist. Monty often bullied Tyler and at some point brutally raped him, leaving Tyler traumatized. After Tyler reported him and Monty was killed in jail, Tyler confessed that he doesn't hate him and feels bad.

S01E13-Tape-7-Side-A-080-Monty-Tyler

Monty slamming Tyler against a wall in "Tape 7, Side A"

Monty was first seen bullying Tyler after Clay took and spread a picture of him naked. As Tyler arrived at school, Monty yelled “Hey Ty-Ty, nice ass!” as he and Bryce showed him their asses.

When Tyler was talking to Sheri about the tapes, Monty arrived and asked Sheri if “this freak” is bothering her. When Sheri left and Tyler tried to go after her, Monty stopped him and said to leave her alone. He slammed Tyler against a door and told him he’d break his camera on his face, but got interrupted by Alex.

As Monty passed Tyler in the school hallways, he pushed him to the ground. Tyler told him “fuck you” and pushed him back, but quickly got slammed against a door. Tyler told him to get his hands off of him and Monty threatened to kill him if he touched him again. Bryce broke it up.

When Tyler had to testify in the trial between the Bakers and the school, Monty painted on his pictures and wrote “you ain’t seen shit”.

S02E13-Bye-061-Monty-Tyler

Monty confronting Tyler in "Bye".

Tyler and Cyrus vandalized the baseball field, burning ‘rapists’ into it. As a result, Tyler got sent to a program for anger control. The baseball season got cancelled, which Monty blamed Tyler for. He and two other guys confronted Tyler in the boys’ restroom after he returned to school. Monty asked why he came back and ruined a lot of things. Tyler calmly said he’s sorry if he hurt him in any way but he’s going to do better. Without being able to finish his sentence, Monty brutally slammed Tyler’s head into the mirror and sink. As he dragged Tyler the toilet, he told him he ruined his life and put his head into the bowl. As the other guys held him down, Monty sodomized Tyler with a mop. This incident led to Tyler’s school shooting attempt.

The Monday after Spring Fling, a few days after Monty raped Tyler, Tyler went back to school. Monty walked by and greeted him. Tyler started panicking and wanted to leave.

S03E02-If-You're-Breathing-You're-a-Liar-028-Monty-Tyler

Monty threatening Tyler in "If You're Breathing, You're a Liar".

Tyler was traumatized by what Monty did. He became suicidal, he wanted to kill himself after shooting up the school first. He had made a video as a suicide note where he explained what Monty did to him. He was too scared to use the boys’ restroom so he would leave the school building when needed to use the toilet. He also got scared whenever someone would touch him. He was heavily bruised all over his body because of the assault.

A few months later, Tyler approached Monty at school and demanded an apology. Monty told him that he has no idea what he’s talking about. Tyler repeated what he said and added that if he doesn’t, he’ll take him and the other two jocks down. Monty told Tyler that he should ask Bryce for an apology as nothing at the school happens without Bryce giving it a go. He then said that what happened has happened to many other guys and it’s nothing. Monty told Tyler to “get over it” and left.

Tyler confronted Bryce about letting Monty rape him, but Bryce revealed that he had no idea about what had happened. Tyler later showed Bryce a video where he talked about what Monty did to him. Bryce confronted Monty in front of Charlie and threatened him. Monty said that he was “just messing” with Tyler.

Monty making kissing noises at Tyler in "In High School, Even on a Good Day, It's Hard to Tell Who's on Your Side".

After Bryce went missing, Monty pushed Tyler against a wall and asked what he did. When Tyler asked him what he meant, Monty explained that he had been questioned at the police station for hours. Tyler swore that he didn’t tell the police anything. Monty said “good” and then whispered in his ear that he’d hate to teach him the same lesson twice. He patted the terrified Tyler on the face and left.

Tyler is seen getting nervous whenever he sees Monty at school. Monty is also seen making kissing noises at Tyler.

Tyler revealed his survivor status at an assembly. Monty didn’t have much of a reaction to it, he kept a straight face. Afterwards, Tyler reported Monty with the help of Monty’s former friend Charlie. Monty got arrested and died in jail.

In the fourth season, Tyler unknowingly befriended Monty’s lover (Winston). Winston asked Tyler if Monty was the one to hurt him, which Tyler confirmed. Winston pointed out that he must hate him, but Tyler said that he doesn’t. He feels bad for Monty as the guy who killed him did it over being a child rapist (Tyler was a minor at the time and Monty was likely 18 years old) even though he isn’t a child. He then said that he used to be angry, but now just feels sad. He later ended his friendship with Winston after finding out his connection with Monty.

During a shooting drill at school, Tyler was hiding in a stall when Estela entered the restroom. He was too scared to tell her about his presence after hearing that she’s Monty’s sister. After Estela found him, Tyler told her that the bathroom is the last place he wants to be in because of what Monty did to him. Estela apologized for what Monty did, and Tyler said that Monty was lucky to have Estela because it means he had something good in his life. Tyler and Estela later started dating.

Cyrus

Cyrus is Tyler's friend. They spent a lot of time together throughout the second season. Their friendship fell apart near the end of the season, but recovered in the third season.

Tyler and Cyrus met in Kevin Porter's class that they both had to attend. Tyler complimented Cyrus on his art and Cyrus complimented Tyler on his photography. Cyrus recognized Tyler from a photo contest he had won.

S02E04-The-Second-Polaroid-099-Tyler-Cyrus

Tyler and Cyrus shooting guns together in "The Second Polaroid".

Cyrus and his friends joined Tyler when he was sitting alone in the library. Cyrus invited Tyler over to his house, where they prepare dinner with Cyrus' dad. Cyrus and his dad encourage Tyler to resist the school. Tyler and Cyrus went to the basement where they started working on a secret project.

The secret project turned out to be a paint bomb, which they place in a duffle bag next to Marcus Cole's car and paint "hypocrite" on the car windows. After the bomb explodes in Marcus' face, the two run off into the woods. Tyler then taught Cyrus how to shoot guns; they practice by shooting bottles.

Cyrus and Tyler made shirts with the word "asshole" written across the front. Cyrus explained that they're claiming the word as their own. They proudly wear it to school. When reading the blog about the Baker's trial against the school, Tyler complained to Cyrus that Ryan Shaver made Hannah Baker look bad in court. Cyrus' friend Chad came up with an idea to catfish Ryan. The three of them laughed at Ryan as they watched him wait for his "date" at Monet's.

Tyler informed Cyrus that his parents found out that they had shot guns and that they want to take them to The Gun Range. At the gun range, Deputy Standall learned them how to properly handle a gun.

Cyrus and Tyler hacked into Zach Dempsey's iCloud, where they found a video of Marcus getting a lap dance from a stripper. They started using it to blackmail Marcus; at first they made Marcus wear a dress at the pep rally, but Marcus made it a publicity stunt by wearing a cheerleading uniform. They continued to blackmail Marcus to out Bryce at the opening of the school's new baseball field, which he did.

S02E09-The-Missing-Page-063-Tyler-Cyrus

Tyler and Cyrus in "The Missing Page"

After Tyler got kicked out from Alex' party, he facetimed Cyrus. Tyler wanted to go after Zach next, which Cyrus was fine with if Tyler came up with a plan.

Cyrus and Tyler go shooting again, where they talk about the successful blackmail on Marcus. Cyrus asked Tyler about going on a date with Mackenzie, and told him that it's fine as long as he isn't "some stalker who follows girls around with a camera".

Cyrus and Tyler vandalized the baseball field and lit it on fire to burn "RAPISTS" into the grass.

Cyrus took Tyler to a punk show that his friends also attended. He overheard Tyler yelling at his sister Mackenzie, telling her that she's boring and he doesn't like her. This angered Cyrus; he yelled at Tyler to leave. The next day, Tyler tried to talk to Cyrus about getting back at Marcus. However, Cyrus was still mad at him for how he treated his sister.

Tyler had posted the pictures of he and Cyrus vandalizing the school on Facebook; Cyrus confronted him about this. Tyler defended his actions by saying it's "punk" and proposed to get revenge as he has guns they can use. Cyrus was afraid of getting expelled and told Tyler that they shouldn't hang out for awhile. Tyler asked Cyrus if they're still friends, to which Cyrus unconvincingly responded "totally".

Tyler found out that Cyrus had told on him and berated him at school after a meeting with the principal about what they did. He teased Cyrus for seeing a therapist and they almost start to fight, but got pulled away by their parents.

S02E11-Bryce-and-Chloe-041-Cyrus-Tyler

After Tyler returned from a disciplinary program, Cyrus talked with him in the school library. They were friendly towards each other and confirmed that they're all right, but Cyrus isn't sure if he still wants to attend another punk show with Tyler.

At the Spring Fling dance, Mackenzie showed Cyrus a text from Tyler that presumably reveals he's going to shoot up the school. When Zach mentioned that they should call the police, Cyrus agreed.

After Tyler's attempted school shooting, Cyrus agreed to lie to the police and say that it was just a prank. He was among the people who helped getting Tyler better by keeping an eye on him.

S03E12-And-Then-the-Hurricane-Hit-037-Mackenzie-Tyler-Cyrus

When Clay became a suspect for Bryce Walker's Murder, Cyrus got called in to talk to Kevin Porter. Mr. Porter asked Cyrus if he was still friends with Tyler. Cyrus responded by saying they weren't because Tyler changed and they drifted apart.

After Tyler revealed that he's a sexual assault survivor, Cyrus and his friends hung out with him again. Cyrus told him that he's a rockstar and stood up for Tyler when Charlie St. George wanted to talk to him. Cyrus was among the people who were present at Tyler's photo exhibition at Monet's.

Mackenzie

Mackenzie is Tyler's friend and former crush. They had a crush on each other and went on a date. They stayed friends.

Mackenzie, her brother and their friends sat with Tyler at the school library. Tyler immediately sparked interest in Mackenzie appeared to like him too.

S02E06-The-Smile-at-the-End-of-the-Dock-105-Tyler-Mackenzie

Tyler and Mackenzie in "The Smile at the End of the Dock".

When Tyler was hanging out with Cyrus at his house, Mackenzie interrupted them and wanted to know what they’re doing. Cyrus told her to leave, but Mackenzie said she’d only leave if Tyler told her to. Tyler was too nervous to say something; Mackenzie called him and Cyrus assholes when Tyler again told her to go.

After Tyler puked on Cyrus’ boots, Mackenzie helped him clean it up. Mackenzie told him that she wouldn’t tell Cyrus what had happened and it could be their secret.

Mackenzie visited Tyler in the photography room. Tyler started yelling as no one is supposed to enter, but then saw it who it was. Mackenzie told him that it was fun to hang out the previous night and asked him out on a date to the movie theatre. Tyler told her that he really wants to.

Tyler got locked in a room at school by a few bullies. Mackenzie freed him and told him that she started to think he was avoiding her. Tyler said he understands if she doesn’t want to go to the movies anymore as she just heard his tape, but Mackenzie said he won’t get out of it that easily and had promised her a date.

During the date, they started cozying up to each other and Mackenzie kissed Tyler. Tyler got an orgasm during the kiss and ran out of the theatre, leaving Mackenzie behind. Mackenzie told a friend about it because she thought she did something wrong, but the word spread around and guys started to make fun of Tyler for it.

S02E09-The-Missing-Page-026-Tyler-Mackenzie

Tyler and Mackenzie kissing on their date in "The Missing Page".

Mackenzie tried to talk with him about what happened during a punk concert, but Tyler yelled at her to shut up because there were two guys listening. Tyler then told Mackenzie that he left the theatre because she's boring and doesn't like her in a romantic way. Mackenzie appeared shocked and saddened by what Tyler said.

When Tyler returned to school after participating in a program, Mackenzie excitedly greeted him. Tyler asked her to the Spring Fling dance, but she revealed that she started dating someone else. This seemingly saddened Tyler. At the dance Mackenzie received a text from Tyler, likely telling her what he's about to do and warning her to leave. She showed it to her brother.

After Tyler's attempted school shooting, Mackenzie agreed to help Tyler get better by looking out for him. She was also shown to support Tyler after he revealed that he’s a sexual assault survivor. It is unknown if Tyler and she still had romantic feelings for each other, but they are shown to care about each other, as Tyler included a smiling photo of her in his photo exhibition and Mackenzie attended the exhibition.

Estela de la Cruz

Estela is Tyler's girlfriend.

S04E10-Graduation-116-Tyler-Estela-Alex

Tyler, Estela and Alex in the last episode "Graduation"

When the school was vandalized and 'Monty was framed' was written on the doors, Tyler and Estela were among the crowd looking at the graffiti. Tyler noticed Estela and grabbed his camera to take a picture of her, but she appeared confused and annoyed at him.

Tyler and Estela never talked until the school shooting drill, Estela was hiding in a bathroom and suddenly heard someone breathing heavily, on the verge of crying, and opened one of the toilet doors to see Tyler panicking. The trauma of the moment is doubled for Tyler because he's stuck in the bathroom, the place where he was assaulted. They started talking to comfort each other and Tyler opens his heart to her, not only about the assault, but about how he came close to committing a school shooting himself in the aftermath of it. He admits that he came very close to doing the same, but that his friends helped him to get better. Estela understands him. "I'm sorry for what my brother did to you" Estela says tearfully, before wondering out loud if Monty would ever have had a chance of getting better, had he lived. "He was lucky to have you for a sister" Tyler replies, "That means he had something good in his life.".

Estela and Tyler's relationship gets even better from there. After the drill, the two are seen standing together and watching Clay as he fights the police in anger and shock. Some time after, Tyler asks her to go to prom with him, to which she excitedly agrees. At prom, they are often seen dancing together, happily. After the date, they officially become a couple as Tyler refers to her as his "boo" in the last episode.

Quotes

Why don't we turn him in? Bryce is dangerous! I don't get why we're still protecting him.
— Tyler to the group about Bryce[src]

What if we confirm Hannah's stories about Bryce? What if we give the school their scapegoat? They have someone to blame, the Bakers have someone to charge with a crime, then whatever we did doesn't matter as much....
— Tyler suggesting to the group to use Bryce as a scapegoat to minimize punishment on themselves.[src]

You should be blaming the kids that make this school a terrible place. You should be blaming the kids that make other kids want to kill themselves.
— Tyler when accusing Mr. Porter of victim blaming[src]

The truth is everyone's still hurting, some more than others.
— Tyler on Hannah's death[src]

Tyler: "People tell lies about you and other people believe them. And it gets to the point where...the lies might as well be the truth."
Dennis: "And did people tell lies about Hannah Baker?"
Tyler: "...Yes, they did. All the time... And, another girl I know [Jess]. She had something happen to her. She had to leave school for a while. While she was gone, the story got twisted."
―  Tyler on the bullying of Students at Liberty High[src]
You hurt, worse, you feel, powerless. And I know some people don't want us to talk about what happened. But if we don't talk about it, it's never going to change. So it's important for everyone to understand how it all happened, the whole story; you know. Cause things at Liberty are as bad as they've ever been. And I don't wanna be afraid anymore. I don't wanna be afraid.
— Tyler about Hannah's story and Liberty High at his testimony[src]

This trial going forward, it affects the whole town. We all have to think about it all over again, how Hannah lived, and how she died. And how it changed all our lives.
— Tyler on Hannah's trial, while testifying[src]

Tyler: "Did you just come here to look at the destruction that is my life, or...?"
Clay: "No. I was wondering, do you ever, work with Polaroids?"
Tyler: "Amateur hipster tripe."
Clay: "I'll take that as a no."
Tyler: "It's retro analog bullshit. There are no negatives, what's the point?"
Hannah (hallucination): "Unless that is the point."
Clay: "So no one can make a copy?"
Tyler: "No, you can make a copy of anything, you just take a digital picture of it. But, yeah, you want one print to hold on to, take a Polaroid."
―  Tyler and Clay (with Hallucination Hannah) on the Polaroids.[src]
Clay: "Do you know these people?"
Tyler: "Tommy Schuster. Erica, Charles, I think. I shot Tommy a few times for baseball."
Clay: "So, they go here?"
Tyler: "They did. They were Seniors when we were Freshmen."
Clay: "Do you think he knew Scott Reed?"
Tyler: "Don't all those troglodytes know each other? Why do you care?"
Clay: "I'm not sure I do."
―  Clay asking Tyler about the subjects of the first polaroid to see if there is a connection.[src]
Alex: "Why did I do this to myself?"
Tyler Down: "You didn't do this. Everyone else at this school did."
―  Tyler showing Alex pictures of him in the hospital[src]

When people stare at you and talk or they don’t stare but you can tell that they want to, just remember that you know who you are, and they don’t.
— Tyler to Clay[src]

I have a chance to be someone else... because of you. Because of all of you.
— Tyler to Clay[src]

Jessica: "Why'd you do it? Or... almost do it."
Tyler: "I don't... I don't know."
Jessica: "But you must have had a reason. Or if you didn't, is that, like, worse?"
Tyler: "No, I did. I mean, I had reasons. I guess I just felt like the only way to make the hurting stop was to make the people who hurt me hurt too, you know?"
―  Tyler and Jessica about why wanted to shoot up the school[src]
I thought I'd never be able to get away from who I was. Who I've been. From what hurt. So, I climbed the bridge, and I looked down, and I saw this, like, flash of purple, like a jacket. And somehow, I just knew. So, I went down below the bridge. And I saw it... him... Bryce. Dead. Cold, like, gray. Like, not a person. And I thought "That's it. He doesn't get to be anyone anymore. It's over for him." And I knew right then that I didn't want to be dead. I want to live, and keep getting better and be stronger, and that's why I want to give the gun away. Because I didn't need it anymore.
— Tyler about finding Bryce's body[src]

And then they dropped me on the floor, and left me there in the toilet water in my own blood. And that was that. That was the worst of it. But it feels like I've been hurting, like, cut and bleeding every day since I was 12. I feel rejected. Not just alone, but rejected. Like I am nothing. No one. And my life is meaningless. I don't think it's ever going to be any different. That school is never going to change. I'm sorry I have so much rage. I wasn't born with it. To everyone I love... I'm really sorry about all of this. Mom and Dad... you've been great parents. You really have. You did your best. I'm sorry. Alex... thank you for being the only one who was ever nice to me. To everyone hearing this... I did what I had to do. That's it. I'm sorry. Goodbye.
— Tyler's recorded message before the attempted shooting[src]

So, there's a picture of everyone that's helped me this year. And I wanted to say thank you. Uh... Having friends is an amazing thing.
— Tyler presenting his exhibition at Monet's[src]

Tyler: "Hey."
Clay: "Hey. Hey, are you okay?"
Tyler: "Yeah, fine."
Clay: "What happened?"
Tyler: "They found the guns... in the river."
Clay: "Fuck."
Tyler: "And they couldn't trace it to anyone at first, you know there's no serial number, no prints. But the bag, they traced the bag back to the store I bought it from. But-but I told them that I bought it, but that someone else stole it from me."
Clay: "And-and they believed you?"
Tyler: "Well Alex's Dad was there, he helped me out, I think we're okay."
Clay: "Let's keep this between you and me, for now."
―  Tyler tells Clay what happened after leaving the Sherrif's Department after being asked to come down.
I think guns can be beautiful. The way they look, along with what they can do. I mean, you can be attracted to them. The fact that I put it in a picture doesn’t mean I think it’s a good thing. It’s… it’s a picture that I needed to take. That I needed people to see. I’m actually… I’m scared of guns. And… and I think they’re beautiful. You know ? And I think a lot of people talk about… kids are angry, kids are sick, kids are violent. But we don’t talk about the more complicated things like the fact that we are attracted to guns. I mean, some people are disgusted by them, for sure. But some of use are attracted, like, drawn to them. And these pictures are meant to get people thinking, you know, about why.
— Tyler during his interview[src]

If anyone ever needs any help, anytime, anyplace, just send a group text, say, "Gordon Lightfoot".
— Tyler to everyone[src]

Trivia

  • Tyler has said on multiple occasions that he has some extremely sensitive photos of many popular people at school.
  • Tyler was preparing to commit a school shooting in "Tape 7, Side A", the last episode of the first season, evidence being his massive trunk containing several guns and large amounts of ammunition. In "Bye", the last episode of the second season he is pushed to the edge by a brutal sexual assault and attempts to commit a school shooting.
  • Tyler was the only person to admit in his deposition video that there are tapes that Hannah recorded.
  • Tyler is shown to be the most despised person on Hannah's list, more so than Bryce to a degree as they refuse to allow him to join in plans to silence Clay about the tapes and throw rocks at his window as Hannah told them to.
  • There is a strong argument regarding his presence in the tapes in the original novel of 13 Reasons Why as Hannah had speculated Tyler was stalking her instead of confronting him as opposed to the television series where he is Hannah‘s stalker.
  • In "Bye", Tyler is brutally sodomized by Montgomery. This makes both Bryce and Montgomery rapists.
  • The name of his Instagram is 'tylerdownphotography'.
  • Tyler possibly has OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder). Cyrus stated "Tyler's kind of OCD. I mispelled 'Hypocrite' on Marcus's window and he freaked out".[19] In "Prom", Estela ask Tyler if he has OCD, Tyler responds yes with humor.
  • Tyler won a photography contest with a night vision photo of a dog urinating.[20]
    • This fact is briefly mentioned by Clay in the book, the photo is described as looking like "a green laser beam blasting out of the dog's crotch." [21]
  • He loves taking pictures.
