This article is about the book character. You may be looking for the TV series character.

Ryan Shaver is a character in Thirteen Reasons Why. Ryan is number eight on Hannah's list, and the curator of the school's anonymous collection of creative writing. Ryan and Hannah used to read each other's poetry and try to discern their meanings. When Hannah shared a particularly stirring and poignant poem, Ryan betrayed her and published her poem anonymously without her permission. He doesn't use her name, so the ridicule she faces over it isn't as bad as it could be, but she knows she wrote it and that's bad enough. The poem was spread widely around school and everyone, including teachers, dissected it and it's unknown author. Though no one besides Ryan (and whoever he may have told) knew Hannah was the author, she still felt exposed, attacked, and betrayed. Hannah might have been able to deal with the whole poem situation, but Ryan's betrayal is what really bothers her. Ryan seems to genuinely understand Hannah's poetry and that she's in a bad place in life. He talks to her like a friend and she really feels connected to him; something that she doesn't feel anywhere else.
