You Can Tell the Heart of a Man by How He Grieves is the sixth episode of the third season of 13 Reasons Why. It is the thirty-second episode of the series overall.

This episode focuses on Tony Padilla and Barry Walker as the main suspects in Bryce Walker's murder.

Synopsis[]

The police bring in Tony for questioning. At Bryce's funeral, Ani uncovers two new damning secrets.

Plot[]

Tony Padilla gets taken in for questioning at the police station. Deputy Standall asks him how well he knew Bryce Walker and whether or not he'll be sad because today is Bryce's funeral. Tony says he really didn’t know Bryce well and that he won't be particularly sad because he's suffered "far worse".

At the funeral, Zach Dempsey and Justin Foley aren’t sure how they can grieve their former friend after every awful thing he did and feel guilty that they are sad. Nora Walker, Bryce's Mom, also appears to be conflicted on how to feel. Barry Walker, Bryce's Dad, uses the funeral as a social opportunity to greet guests, smiling. He appears to not feel any emotion over his sons death, so Clay becomes suspicious of him, but Ani points out that being a bad father doesn't make him Bryce's murderer.

In a flashback, we see how Barry treated the family. He left Nora and Bryce and immediately bought a house down the street with his new girlfriend. He didn't care about having any continued contact with Bryce or his ex-wife. Bryce even asks him to play golf sometime, to which his dad affirms to although showing no enthusiasm or intention of following through.

Bryce then breaks into his father’s actual house and messes up the place, leading Barry to have an intense fight with his son. Bryce refuses to pay for any damages, and reminds his father of Caitlin. Caitlin is revealed to be his 12-year-old daughter, Bryce's half-sister, from a secret affair. Nora calms Bryce down and tells him that they have to move on and that they must be done being controlled by Barry.

In another flashback, Tony’s family was taken by ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement). He sold his car to Bryce to pay for lawyers to help them, though it wasn’t enough and ultimately his family was deported. Clay is upset that Tony didn’t confide in him, and Tony says it’s because Clay could never understand what he’s going through. Clay understands and realizes it’s true, as his family could never face the threat of deportation. Grateful that it could never happen and knowing how privileged he is, he goes home and hugs his Mom and Dad, before suggesting that they make some space in their collection of family photo for photos of Justin, since he's family to them, on the fireplace mantle.

Jessica’s activist group shows up at Bryce's funeral and they stand up in the middle of Nora’s speech to call him a rapist. Barry demands the women are arrested and grabs one of the women to shout in their face. A majority of the people who attended the funeral all go to Mrs. Walkers' house after the funeral.

The cops examine the security footage from the Walker house to look for more clues about Bryce's murder. They find footage of Clay threatening Bryce with a gun, from "Bryce and Chloe"/"The Box of Polaroids", which makes Clay look very guilty.

Evidence[]

On this one, Clay and Ani suspected different people. Ani, and the cops, suspected Tony Padilla and Clay refused to believe that Tony could have killed Bryce and tried to find another suspect, he suspected Bryce's father, Barry Walker and Ani gave him information that made Ani question Barry too. Clay later went with Ani and investigated Tony.

Barry Walker[]

You-Can-Tell-the-Heart-of-a-Man-by-How-He-Grieves-Evidence-Divorce-Papers

Opening intro shows a folder with papers in an evidence bag as the sixth piece of evidence

  • Object: A folder containing divorce papers.
    • Explanation:
(Flashback): Barry Walker came back to town to sign his divorce papers that would officially cut him off from Nora Walker. Ani remembered watching Bryce and Barry fight in front of Nora. Barry tried to cut off ties from Bryce, and started a new family with a woman named Katya, Bryce found out about Barry's new family after he broke into their house. Barry came over to the Chatham household and confronted Bryce about it, he almost got into a physical altercation with Bryce but Nora stopped him from causing any harm. Bryce admitted to breaking into Barry and Katya's house and showed no remorse, in fact rubbing it in his father's face. Barry became furious at Bryce but before he could do anything Bryce said the name of Barry and Katya's child out loud: Caitlin. Nora was not aware that Barry had a child with Katya, which was a "nuclear option" for Nora in her divorce with Barry. Bryce told Nora that he had found their divorce papers and told her, in front of Barry "Wouldn't matter if Dad had signed the divorce papers, but... he decided to risk it", indicating that Barry cheated on Nora with Katya and had an illegitimate child named Caitlin with her.

(Present): During Bryce's wake, Clay searched the Chatham household and found divorce papers that listed Caitlin to be Barry's child. Bryce telling Nora about it pissed off Barry to the point where he grew deep hatred for Bryce and he told Bryce that he would regret telling Nora about Caitlin, implying that he had planned to get Bryce back. This revelation and his deep hatred for Bryce tied with the fact that he didn't seem to grieve Bryce made Clay suspect him of killing his own son. However Ani didn't think it was enough motive and suspected Tony instead.

Tony Padilla[]

  • Object: Tony's mustang
    • Explanation (Ani):

Ani shows Clay the Mustang she found that she believed to be Tony's.

Ani had found Tony's Mustang, that he used to drive, in the garage of the Chatham household in "Nobody's Clean", and questioned what motive Tony might have had. Clay refused to believe that Tony had any motive and told Ani that Tony told him he sold his car to help his father's shop. However Ani didn't believe that Tony had told Clay the truth, although Clay had not seen the car that Ani found, Clay refused to believe that it was Tony's car. After Bryce's wake, Ani brought Clay to the garage to look at the car. Clay realized that it was in fact Tony's mustang, but believe there was a good reason for it being there. Clay investigated Tony's father's house and found out that it was empty with a foreclosure notice, a man stopped by and told him that Tony's family left the neighborhood. Clay and Ani confronted Caleb—Tony's boyfriend—and found out that Tony was down at the police station being interrogated, they asked Caleb about the Mustang and Caleb revealed that Tony's family got deported and so he sold Bryce his Mustang so he could send his family money abroad. (Much later, Clay confronted Tony about a tie the Walker family had to Tony's family being deported)
    • Explanation (The Cops):
      S03E06-You-Can-Tell-the-Heart-of-a-Man-by-How-He-Grieves-023-Tony-Padilla

Tony being interrogated by Deputy Standall.

The cops found a new tail light lens and traced it back to the distributor, and found out where the tail light lens was wholesaled to, which was revealed to be Padilla Automotive, a car repair shop that Tony and his family own. Deputy Standall interrogated Tony and Tony told him that he assumed Bryce brought his car into the shop and Javier—a family member—dealt with it but he had no contact with Bryce and wasn't aware of it. Deputy Standall told Tony that they would have to bring Javier in and also check his legal status, which raised red flag for Tony considering that the rest of the his family had been deported. Tony stopped him and asked to see a lawyer before speaking further.

Quotes[]

We all have secrets that we carry with us. And the more we carry, the heavier the load.
— Ani narrating

In some families, secrets build up over years. Lifetimes, even. But death has a way of shaking things loose. Grief makes us behave in ways we might not expect.
— Ani narrating

Bryce was a real competitor on the field. He fought for his team. Always. He was loyal, and he was strong. He was the kind of strong that I always wished that I could be. In a way. I didn't always agree with Bryce. Or what he did. But I wonder sometimes if all we are is the sum of our actions in the end. Or if we're more than that. I want to believe that we're more than that. There was a time where I called Bryce Walker my brother. And there was a time where I didn't. But we're all brothers and sisters. All of us. And whether I like it or not, I am my brother's keeper. So Bryce, I'm sorry, and goodbye.
— Zach's speech at Bryce's funeral

There is a son that only a mother can see. A mother always sees the little boy inside the man. So, there is a Bryce I wish you all had known. He was capable of hurtful things. And he was capable of deep love. He had a soul that wanted to be good. And a heart that didn't always know how. But he was growing and getting better. And there were moments in these last months where I saw not only the little boy but the good, good man he might become.
— Mrs. Walker's speech at Bryce's funeral

Deputy Standall: "So we're just trying to understand your relationship with Bryce."
Tony: "Well, that's easy, 'cause there wasn't one."
―  Deputy Standall interrogating Tony
Nora: "They promised four uniformed deputies and the sheriff is here."
Amara Josephine: " They don't think children would disrupt a funeral?"
Nora: "They found flyers at the school."
Amara Josephine: " But all these people have come to pay their respects. "
Nora: "I'm not sure that's why they're all here. I can't help but think his killer might be one of them."
―  Nora Walker and Amara Josephine at Bryce's funeral
Charlie: "He was always really nice to me, even when I was a freshman. I guess he changed."
Justin: "No, the same guy who was nice to you is the same guy who someone wanted dead."
